Buy Online Pick Up In Store: Christmas 2026 Playbook

A pre-Christmas audit for buy online, pick up in store: what Shopify requires, what's Plus-only, and how to catch stale holiday hours before December 24.

Buy online, pick up in store works at Christmas only when shoppers can see which location is open the day they plan to collect. Shopify's native pickup setting does not manage holiday hours. That sits in your locations setup, your theme, or a separate locator, and it's the piece most stores forget before December 24.

What Shopify's Pickup In Store Actually Requires

Shopify documents two requirements for pickup in store: at least one location that fulfills online orders, and the latest version of checkout. Nothing in that list mentions seasonal hours.

Two pieces of the feature are plan-gated differently. Custom pickup apps that replace the default flow are Shopify Plus only. Splitting one order into partial ship and partial pickup needs a feature test drive, limited to Plus and Enterprise.

Two Systems, Often Confused

Pickup in store is a checkout setting. It controls whether Pick up appears as a delivery option and how pickup orders get fulfilled. Showing customers your hours, address, and directions before checkout is a separate job, handled by your theme or a locator page.

Mixing the two causes the usual holiday mistake. A store can have pickup correctly activated in Shopify admin while its locations page still shows last year's hours, because nobody connected the two updates.

What Shopify Gates By Plan, And What It Doesn't

Four capabilities sit on different sides of the plan line, based on Shopify's own setup and feature pages.

  • Core pickup in store, the Ship or Pick up choice at checkout: Shopify's setup guide names two requirements, a fulfilling location and the latest checkout, and does not name a required plan.
  • A custom pickup app that replaces the default flow: Shopify Plus only, per Shopify's documentation.
  • Splitting one order into partial ship and partial pickup: Shopify Plus and Enterprise only, and only after activating the feature test drive.
  • The pickup availability badge on product pages: Shopify lists this as available in Dawn, the Horizon family, and some paid themes, with no plan named.

The Pre-Christmas Pickup Audit

Run this once per location before the volume picks up, not once for the whole store.

  1. Confirm pickup in store is still active for every location, not only your busiest one, since Shopify toggles it location by location.
  2. Update checkout's processing time for the holiday rush; a normal-week estimate can be wrong once staff and stock are stretched.
  3. Decide which collections to exclude from store transfers before oversized items get routed between stores at the worst time.
  4. Edit holiday hours everywhere a customer could see them: the locations page, theme sections, and any locator app, then check they actually match.
  5. Rewrite the Ready for pickup notification and each location's pickup instructions if real hours differ; location-specific instructions override the general template.
  6. Walk through checkout as a shopper would: choose Pick up, pick a location, and confirm the pickup date shown is realistic.

If you run more than a handful of locations, treat hours like inventory housekeeping, not a one-time setting.

If you show hours through a locator app, check how it stores them before trusting step four. Progus Store Locator shows hours with an open now status per location, so update them there too.

Test It Like A Shopper Would

A live checkout test on your own store beats any general guide, so turn the idea into questions you run yourself before holiday copy goes out.

  1. From a phone, logged out, does choosing Pick up show a realistic pickup estimate and instructions for that location, and do the hours on your locator or theme match?
  2. If a location is closed between Christmas and New Year, is pickup turned off for that location in Shopify admin, with a calendar reminder to turn it back on afterwards, or will checkout still offer it?
  3. If an item is out of stock at the nearest location, does the order block, or does a store transfer move it quietly?
  4. Does the Ready for pickup email sent during the rush promise anything staff can't actually deliver this week, such as same-day pickup?

When The Audit Is Done

Call it finished when three things hold: every active location shows this week's real hours, the Ready for pickup message matches what staff can deliver, and a stranger finds a location's hours in under a minute from a product page. That bar is our recommendation, not a Shopify requirement.

Final Thoughts

Pickup in store survives carrier delays because it never depends on a carrier. What usually breaks it is the same list every December: stale hours, a location that's quietly closed, or a notification promising something staff can't do that week.

None of that needs new code. It needs someone to walk the checkout as a customer, location by location, before volume turns a small mistake into a support queue.

FAQ

Do I need Shopify Plus to offer pickup in store?

No. Shopify lists the core feature as available with a fulfilling location and the latest checkout, with no plan named. Custom pickup apps need Shopify Plus; splitting one order into partial ship and partial pickup needs Plus and Enterprise through the feature test drive.

What happens if the location a customer picks is out of stock?

By default Shopify only offers pickup when the full order is in stock at that location. Store transfers from other locations let the order go through instead, with an adjusted pickup time.

Can I turn off pickup at one location without disabling it everywhere?

Yes. Pickup in store is activated per location in Shopify admin, so you can turn it off for a single store, during a holiday closure for example, while every other location stays active.

Will customers automatically see pickup availability on product pages?

Only if the theme supports it. Shopify currently limits that badge to Dawn, the Horizon family, and a handful of paid themes, so other themes need a Partner or a manual addition.
