Shopify Subscriptions: iDEAL or Bancontact First, SEPA Renewals
How iDEAL or Bancontact can start an EUR Shopify subscription that renews by SEPA Direct Debit through Mollie.
Yes. In a Shopify store that sells in EUR, a subscription can start with iDEAL or Bancontact and renew by SEPA Direct Debit when the first payment provides a valid direct debit mandate. Both the first-payment method and SEPA Direct Debit must be active on the merchant's Mollie profile.
The shopper uses a familiar bank method for the first order. Later subscription charges use SEPA Direct Debit instead of asking the shopper to repeat checkout.
Why this flow matters
A Shopify Community feature request asks for iDEAL or Bancontact first payments followed by SEPA Direct Debit renewals.
The payment has three stages:
- First order: the customer completes an iDEAL or Bancontact payment.
- Authorization: that first payment establishes the direct debit mandate needed for later collection.
- Renewal: the stored mandate is charged by SEPA Direct Debit.
Mollie's recurring payments documentation lists iDEAL and Bancontact as first-payment methods that create a direct debit mandate. It also requires SEPA Direct Debit to be enabled on the Mollie profile.
How the payment rail works
The first payment is made through the merchant's own Mollie account connected in the subscription app. Renewals are then charged by SEPA Direct Debit against the stored mandate.
The current code marks iDEAL and Bancontact as proven in production. The first payment is used to create a SEPA Direct Debit mandate for renewals.
Renewals require EUR. Cards and wallets follow Shopify checkout rather than this SEPA mandate path.
Supported and unverified methods
The code also allows KBC, Belfius, EPS and Pay by Bank. Mollie documents these as first-payment methods for a direct debit mandate.
Only iDEAL and Bancontact are marked in the code as proven in production. KBC, Belfius, EPS and Pay by Bank should therefore be tested before a live rollout.
A completed first order and a renewable subscription are separate checkpoints. Before the first renewal, confirm that the Mollie customer has a valid mandate.
Setup checklist
- Confirm that the Shopify store sells in EUR.
- Connect the merchant's Mollie account in the subscription app.
- Activate iDEAL or Bancontact on the Mollie profile for the first payment.
- Activate SEPA Direct Debit on the same profile for renewals.
- Create or assign the subscription selling plan.
- Run a real low-value first order with the selected method. Test mode proves configuration, but not live bank behavior.
- Check that the Mollie customer has a valid mandate before the first renewal.
Diagnose a failed start
The Progus Subscriptions flow relies on the merchant's connected Mollie account for this payment path. Check the paid Mollie payment and the mandate attached to the Mollie customer.
If the first payment succeeds but no valid mandate is available, do not count the subscriber as ready for renewal. Check the payment method, store currency, Mollie profile activation and mandate status.
Measure the flow after launch
Report completed first payments, valid mandates and successful first renewals separately. Combining them into one conversion number hides the failure point.
Use a fresh cohort that started after this payment flow was enabled. Subscribers who started earlier may have used a different payment path, so keep them out of this result.
In Mollie, measure the share of paid first orders that have a valid mandate. Then measure the share of those customers who complete the first renewal. A fall in either step points to a payment-flow problem, not necessarily a pricing problem.
For the wider cost structure around app fees, processing and failed charges, use the Shopify subscription cost guide as a separate audit.
FAQ
Can the first Shopify subscription payment use iDEAL?
Yes, when the store sells in EUR and the merchant's Mollie setup can create a valid SEPA Direct Debit mandate from that first payment.
Can Bancontact be used for the first payment?
Yes. Bancontact is marked as proven in production in the current code, subject to the same EUR, profile and mandate requirements.
Are renewals charged through iDEAL or Bancontact?
No. These methods handle the first payment. Renewals use SEPA Direct Debit against the stored mandate.
Does activating iDEAL alone enable renewals?
No. SEPA Direct Debit must also be active on the merchant's Mollie profile because it is used for recurring collection.
Does the same flow support KBC and Belfius?
The code allows them and Mollie documents them as first-payment methods for a direct debit mandate. They are not marked as production-verified in the code, so test them before live use.
